Fourth Year Courses-

The Fourth year classes start with introducing the student to Directional Bore. From contacting JULIE and DIGGER to hands-on locating on the job. Next is Backhoe/Excavation this will teach the knowledge, terms, safety, maintenance and the operation of backhoe equipment. Finally they finish up the 4th year taking Leadership courses which teaches them various aspects of leading a work crew. IMSA is also a part of this year. 

 Directional Boring (DBORE)

Course Description:

The student is first introduced to terms and definitions as applied.  Then job safety is discussed, especially as it applies to boring. Next time is spent on the very important aspect of locating, from contacting JULIE and DIGGER to hands-on locating on the job.  With equipment and tools on-site, every part of the operation of the boring machine from starting, maintenance, installation and removal of the drill and other parts are covered thoroughly.  Planning and executing a drill operation from start to finish is done hands-on with the equipment. 

Backhoe/Excavation (BH/EX)

Course Description:

This course will teach the basic knowledge, terms, safety, maintenance and the operation of backhoe equipment.

Rules to Dig By will be covered as well as proper setup and technique for digging. Also will go over maintenance and "what if" situations needed on the job.

Classes can be held in any weather utilizing our large garage building.

The students will participate in a variety of real world skill games that give them the understanding and experience to perform on the job. Backhoe and skid steer are covered so upon completion they are a competent operator for their job.

IMSA Program

Course Description:

Work Zone safety  The IMSA is a world-wide recognized certification program for those who work on installing and programming traffic intersections. Completion of Traffic A, B & C are pre-requisites to start this program.
Work Zone Safety is the first course.
Problems of traffic control occur when traffic must be moved through or around road or street construction, maintenance operations on or adjacent to the roadway. This course was specifically developed by the principles and procedures which experience has shown to enhance the safety of motorists and the workers in the vicinity of work areas.
There is a fee charged to take the test. IMSA grades the test and upon passing a certificate is issued by them.

IMSA Level I  

The Traffic Signal Level I program is based on the concept for relating fundamentals of traffic signal design, traffic signal installation, maintenance and limited trouble shooting. This is the entry course for traffic signal technicians and discusses the basic procedures of how and why to install signalized intersections. This program is designed to enhance public safety by helping individuals to review fundamental concepts associated with traffic signal design, construction, and operation.
There is a fee charged to take the test. IMSA grades the test and upon passing a certificate is issued by them.

IMSA Level II   This course includes further study in traffic signals; signal indications and signal-related signing; planning for traffic signals; designing traffic signals; vehicle detection; traffic signal supports; installing traffic signals: construction procedures; installing traffic signals: construction equipment; preventive maintenance, signal timing concepts, traffic signal phasing, pre-emption, coordination and dealing with the public. There is a fee charged to take the test. IMSA grades the test and upon passing, a certificate is issued by them.

Leadership

Course description:

We face a life skills crisis. This crisis can be conceptualized as a catastrophic imbalance between supply and demand. Much is being made these days of the need to boost technical skills in the trade industry. Though, in terms of importance, the need to boost technical skills runs a distant second to the need to boost life skills. For the happiness and success of our apprentices and the productiveness and success of our contractors, we need to admit, face and address the life skills crisis. Topics coved are as follows.
